Salmon Woman

Salmon is one of the staples of life — both physical and spiritual — of the northwestern Coast Salish tribes. There are many variations of the story of Salmon Woman, all having to do with people taking her abundant bounty for granted.

A Lummi story tells us how Salmon Woman took her children away from the rivers because people failed to show respect for her gift of food. Today the First Salmon Ceremony is still celebrated each spring.
